To strip Anodic Coatings (used to verify coating weight)

To Make Approx. 2 Liters
ACS Reagent Grade Chromic Acid Anhydride................. 40 ± 1 gram
ACS Reagent Grade Phosphoric Acid............................ 70 ± 1 mL
DI water...................................................................... 2 Liters

Control stripping solution temperature 212 ± 10°F, Solution should be discarded after 5 grams of anodic coating has been dissolved per liter of solution.


To strip Nickel from Brass or Copper;

General Recipe
Sulfuric acid (H2SO4)................................................... 10% by volume
M-nitrobenzene sulfonic acid, sodium slat (Ultrex NBS)... 5-10 oz/gal
warm water.................................................................. balance

To make 1 Liter.........................To make 8 gallons
56 grams................................. 5 lbs............................ Ultrex NBS
100 mL.................................... 3 L.............................. H2SO4
warm water.................................................................. balance

Strip rate increases with heat however, keep temperature below 150°F (130-140°F works best).


To strip Silver from Brass;

General Recipe
Sulfuric acid (H2SO4)................................................... 19 parts = 95% by volume
Nitric Acid (HNO3)........................................................ 1 part = 5% by volume

Absolutely No Water!!! Add HNO3 to the H2SO4 Slowly!!! Use solution at room temperature.


To strip Cadmium from Brass;

General Recipe
Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)................................................. 50% by volume
Water.......................................................................... 50% by volume

Any acid will work & of course "do it like you otta... add the acid to the water!"


Olive Drab Chromate Touch-up Solution;

To make 500 mL
Kenvert 11 (acidic solution)........................................... 90 mL
Ammonium Bifluoride.................................................... 0.5 grams
Water.......................................................................... 410 mL


To make pH probe descaling soln (0.1N HCl from ACS HCl);

To make 1 liter
ACS Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)......................................... 8.3 mL
Water.......................................................................... Dilute to 1L

Remember: "do it like you otta... add the acid to the water!"
